Zander, a Head Start child, gets a little help with his shoes from Teacher Tiffany Riggins

The NRCC Head Start program offers personal tools of success to its student parents and their children.

By: Alexis Smith

During Dr. Seuss week at the Early Learning Center Head Start classroom at New River Community College (NRCC), children enrolled in the Head Start program create crafts, read books and learned about the whimsical, late children’s author. In the midst of the kid’s enjoyment, their parents are a couple of doors down receiving their daily college lecture. These parents are enrolled in the NRCC Accountability to Student Learning program which provides NRCC case manager services (Connection Specialists) in addition to the Head Start Family/Health Advocate for family services.

Congrats, Parents!

Head Start parents show their diligence.
Success, especially with the parents of the children enrolled in Head Start, has been especially prevalent. Head Start has seven families enrolled in school; one being employed with the New River Community College. Head Start is pleased to announce since enrolling children in the NRCC Early Learning Center, one parent has received their GED, another has earned entry into the NRCC nursing program, and one parent has gained employment in her field of study.

More to come…

NRCA Head Start centers serve the counties of Giles, Floyd, Montgomery, Radford, and Pulaski. More than 300 children receive the developmental and advancement learning provided by Head Start instructors. Head Start emphasizes the focus of parents as well, offering literacy development, access to employment training and parenting advancement. Parents seeking this type of assistance with their children, as well as themselves are encouraged to apply for the program.  Applications are available on our Head Start page online.
