The New River Community Action (NRCA) Board of Directors has announced the resignation of Ms. Krystal Thompson, Chief Executive Officer, effective the end of July 2023.
The New River Community Action (NRCA) Board of Directors has announced the resignation of Ms. Krystal Thompson, Chief Executive Officer, effective the end of July 2023. ”It was with sadness that we received the news that Krystal will be leaving for family reasons, and we all wish her the very best in her next endeavor,” stated Aline Brinckman, Board Chair Elect of the NRCA Board of Directors. “The board is committed to finding a successor that will continue the impressive legacy of strong, effective leadership, comprehensive community partnerships, advocacy, expansion of programs and facilities, and service to our communities that Krystal has given us. Krystal’s unwavering dedication to NRCA extends to working with the board and staff to ensure a smooth transition.”
NRCA is one of approximately 1,000 Community Action Agencies nationwide established as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. The agency administers programs that meet basic needs, impact school readiness, strengthen families, and promote economic stability, with operations in Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski Counties and the City of Radford. NRCA manages over $8,500,000 in annual revenues, employs 130 full and part-time staff, and serves over 8,000 NRV residents annually.
During her tenure, Ms. Thompson provided leadership developing and launching strategic initiatives designed to improve self-sufficiency and end multi-generational poverty in the NRV. NRCA expanded services for persons experiencing homelessness and committed to playing a larger role in developing deeply affordable housing. Additionally, NRCA was selected to participate in a three-year demonstration site program to build protective factors for children and their families utilizing a Family Resource Center model proven to reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect, advance racial equity and support underserved communities. In January 2024, NRCA will open a community hub designed to enhance service delivery and improve accessibility to NRCA services, as well as provide additional space for partner agencies, workforce development resources and community meetings.
Ms. Thompson states “I have very much enjoyed working alongside the incredible staff and board at NRCA for the last two years. Partnering to deliver life changing services and design a path forward that makes an even greater difference on the lives of the most vulnerable has been a true joy. While I am thrilled to be moving closer geographically to family, I will miss playing a role in the transformational work of NRCA. Agency leadership will, in collaboration with community partners, ensure completion of identified initiatives and reach our goal of a New River Valley where all people are empowered to thrive.”
The NRCA Board of Directors will begin a nationwide search for a new CEO later this month.
