Sheryl Helm (Director of Early Childhood and Family Services) and Anne Faris (Head Start Early Education & Child Development Specialist) presented the 2019 Alice Taylor Award to Penny Livesay.

New River Community Action (NRCA) Head Start presented their annual prestigious 2019 Alice Taylor Award to Penny Livesay at the program’s annual Policy Council recognition event on May 15, 2019.   Head Start staff presented the award to Ms. Livesay for her work in obtaining and distributing 10,000 books to children in Giles County and other areas of the New River Valley.

Ms. Livesay is known to New River Community Action as “The Book Lady.”   She keeps the NRCA Head Start and Children’s Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP) programs stocked with new and gently used books, coloring books, and crayons at no charge to the programs or children. She has an impassioned desire to see every young child in the area have a large set of reading books before time to enroll in kindergarten.

Ms. Livesay uses donations to purchase new books and collects gently used books.  She distributes only books of exceptional quality for teaching young children.  She believes in the importance of providing children with books so that they can learn to read and have something worthwhile to read.  Ms. Livesay credits her late father for her inspiration and passion and feels the book project honors him.

NRCA extends deepest appreciate to Ms. Penny Livesay!
