Floyd County School Children’s Weekend Food Backpack Program
Supported by the New River Health Foundation – along with your donations — the program ensures that children in Floyd County have extra food at home for the weekends, when they’re away from school.
Volunteers purchase child-friendly food such as fruit cups, applesauce, raisins, macaroni and cheese, breakfast bars, fruit drinks, and oatmeal. The goal is to provide two days of food.
Called the Backpack Program because food was once distributed in backpacks, Ziplock bags are now distributed to students every Thursday when school is in session.
Floyd County children in Head Start through high school are eligible for the program. The program is recommended for children receiving free or reduced-price meals at school but is open to any Floyd County Student.
