At New River Community Action, we help our local areas tackle problems such as poverty, homelessness, and the lack of educational opportunities. We work with over 1,000 local volunteers to manage programs that bring greater self-reliance to the most at-risk residents in the New River Valley, including disabled people, ex-offenders, and low-income families.

CHIP
CHIP or the Children’s Health Improvement Partnership helps low-income families with children through age six – as well as pregnant women — with access to medical and dental services and puts them in touch with other service organizations/providers in the New River Valley.
Emergency Assistance Programs
Emergency Assistance Programs provide temporary assistance with food, rent, utilities and more for individuals and families in a financial crisis.
Head Start
Head Start is a federally funded preschool program that provides education, social services, preventative health, and nutrition to children 3-5 years old. Children with special needs make up at least ten percent of the enrollment.
Homeless and Housing Programs
Homeless and Housing Programs provide immediate shelter and counseling to people who are struggling to find or maintain affordable housing.
Virginia Cares
The mission of Virginia CARES — or the Virginia Community Action Re-Entry System — is to assist newly released ex-offenders and their families successfully transition from prison back into their communities.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
New River Community Action’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program – or VITA — utilizes IRS-certified volunteers to provide free basic income tax return preparation for qualified individuals. We file electronically, and assistance is provided from February through April of each year.
