Floyd County School Children’s Weekend Food Backpack Program

Supported by the New River Health Foundation,  and donations, the program provides food to Floyd County children for the weekend.

Volunteers purchase food items that are easy to prepare and filling. Child-friendly food items such as a fruit cup, applesauce, raisins, macaroni and cheese, breakfast bars, fruit drink, and oatmeal are included. The goal is to provide two days of food.

The program is called the Backpack Program because initially food was placed in backpacks, but now is placed in Ziploc bags and distributed to students every Thursday that school is in session.

Floyd County children in Head Start through high school are eligible for the program.  The program is recommended for children receiving free or reduced-price meals at school, but is open to any Floyd County Student.
